7 - Performance and characteristics of metals - Non-ferrous alloys Flashcards
1
Q
Bronze
A
Tough, corrosion resistant, can be cast
90% copper, 10% tin
Melting point: 850-1000*C
Statues, coins
2
Q
Brass
A
Corrosion resistant, good electrical and thermal conductor, low melting point, casts well
65% copper, 35% zinc
Melting point: 930*C
Boat fittings, door parts, valves and taps
3
Q
Duralumin
A
Similar strength to mild steel but more light weight and ductile. Becomes harder the more it’s worked
Aluminium with 4% copper, 1% magnesium and manganese
Aircraft and car parts
4
Q
Pewter
A
Malleable, low melting point, casts well
85-99% tin, the rest is copper
Melting point: 170-230*C
Flasks, tankards, goblets. Candlesticks, trophies, photoframes
