6 - Performance characteristics of woods - Wood seasoning and characteristics Flashcards
Wood is:
Strong along the grain, weak across the grain
Converted into useable pieces, then SEASONED to remove excess moisture before use
Why is wood ‘seasoned’?
Prevents defects like twisting, cracking, cupping or bowing.
Gives wood greater resistance to decay and rot.
Helps preservatives to penetrate.
Air seasoning
Traditional, cheap
Wood stacked in a shelter outside.
Air circulates between the planks and removes excess moisture.
Slow, taking up to a year.
This wood is used for outdoor products
Kiln seasoning
Expensive, uses controlled temperature and humidity levels
Wood stacked on trolleys.
Kiln is steamy first, then becomes hot and dry.
Quick process, takes a few weeks.
Wood is used for indoor products.
Toxicity
Some species are more toxic than others, with some causing respiratory problems and others being carcinogenic.
Therefore employers should provide PPE (personal protective equipment) and make sure ventilation and extraction systems are working well.
