12 - Modern materials - Classification Flashcards
Kevlar
Aramid fibres (strong, synthetic) with high cut and heat resistance
Used in body armour, cut-proof gloves and aprons, puncture-resistant tyres
Precious Metal Clay (PMC)
Clay consistency material, made up of fine metal particles. Easily mouldable. Sets as a hard metal when fired in a kiln or flame, clay binder burns off.
Inexpensive compared to solid metals, like silver
Used in jewellery, small sculptures
High-density modelling foam
Polyurethane closed-cell foam blocks or sheets
Lightweight, easy to work with using workshop tools. Sands easily to allow intricate shapes and models to be created.
3D modelling, prototyping
Polymorph
Granules that become mouldable at 60*C
Can be heated in warm water or with a hair dryer. Solid at room temperature
Used for modelling, shaping ergonomics handles, prototyping
