What are the standard paper stock forms?
A0 to A8, with each ‘A’ size being 1/2 of the previous
-(A4 is 1/2 the size of A3)
Paper thickness is measured in GSM. Lower GSM means the paper is more lightweight and thus easier to bend, cut and score.
Layout paper
Thin, translucent, smooth surface
Sketching, technical drawing
Cartridge paper
Off-white, slightly textured surface
Sketching, rendering in ink, pastel or pencil
Tracing paper
Translucent paper, slightly thicker than layout paper
Copying (tracing) images when sketching
Bleed-proof paper
Like cartridge paper, but colours don’t run
Marker rendering
Corrugated card
Carton board outer layers, corrugated middle layer. Gives the material strength against impact.
Protective packaging, model making/ prototyping, food packaging
Bleached card
Chemically treated to have a brighter surface, suitable for high quality printing
Birthday cards, high-quality packaging
Mount board
Made from compressed fine cotton fibred to produce a rigid board
Picture mounting, modelling
Duplex card
2 layers of paper, exterior layer often coated to give it a glossy look and waxy feel
Food packaging (juice cartons), disposable cups and plates
Foil-backed and laminated card
Card with polymer film or foil applied to provide a water resistant or heat-insulating layer
Drinks packaging, take-away packaging
Moulded paper pulp
Recycled paper pulp, moulded when wet and dried to a specific shape. Smooth on the visible side, rough and textured on the other side
Egg boxes, fruit packaging, eco-friendly packaging
Metal effect card
High-quality card with a thin metal effect layer on the outside to enhance aesthetics. Can be embossed
Business cards, gift boxes and packaging
