#7: Nucleic Acids Flashcards
Function
Store heredity info and determine structural and functional characteristics of organisms
Structure
Consists of nucleotides joined together in long strands
Two types: DNA and RNA
Nucleotides
DNA
Double strand
Heredity of cell
RNA
Single strand
Active in making proteins for cell
Act as messenger
Nucleotides
Consists of phosphate group, sugar, nitrogenous base
Form from strands of DNA and RNA through condensation reaction
Hydroxyl from phosphate group and hydroxyl from sugar combine and give off water
Bond formed called PHOSPHODIESTER BOND
Phosphate Group
PO4
Identical in DNA and RNA
Sugar
Pentose
RNA- ribose
DNA- deoxyribose
Nitrogenous Base
DNA:
Contains adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine
Bonding- A and T, G and C
RNA:
Contains adenine, guanine, cytosine, uracil
Bonding- A and U, G and C
A & T/U form 2 H-Bonds
G & C form 3 H-Bonds
DNA structure
Consists of two strands, which are held together by H-Bonds between nitrogenous bases
Two strands run opposite directions (antiparallel)
3’ denote sugar end
5’ denote phosphate end
One strand run 3’ to 5’ and other 5’ to 3’
