Feels a consistent and overwhelming desire to fulfil life as a member of opposite sex
What causes depression and anxiety in the LGBT population?
Discrimination and marginalisation
What can discrimination lead to?
Increased stress
Low self-esteem
Isolation
Sub-culture with unhealthy behaviours e.g. smoking
Distrust of authorities - not reporting MH problems
What are some important health needs for LGBT population?
Mental health
Substance use
Cancer - anal
STI - HIV and syphilis in MSM
What are some problems with current healthcare professionals’ treatment of LGBT?
Inappropriate questions
Prejudice
Not respecting confidentiality
What is heterosexism?
Discrimination or prejudice against homosexuals on the assumption that heterosexuality is the normal sexual orientation
Give examples of some assumptions made about LGBT populations in healthcare:
Assuming a patient has opposite sex partner
Assuming a butch looking women doesn’t need contraception
Why can terminology around sexual behaviour be a problem when talking to patients?
Different patients have different ideas abut what the term ‘sex’ means
Must be specific and check patient understanding
What is the NATSAL survey?
National survey of sexual attitudes and lifestyle
Why is it difficult to obtain accurate information about sexual behaviour?
Sensitive subject, people may not want to reveal info
Small sample size
People can’t recall all sexual encounters
What are the implications of diversity in sexual behaviour?
Varies greatly between people and ages
Often stereotypes used and diversity overlooked (old people don’t have sex)
