What is the relevance of human diversity in healthcare?
Different groups of people have different: Health problems Health beliefs Health behaviours Health needs
What are stereotypes?
Generalisations we make about specific social groups and members of those groups
Why are stereotypes useful?
Save ‘processing power’ and makes environment predictable by organising information as schemata
What is schemata?
Members of group share some characteristics
What are the negatives of schemata?
Overlooks diversity
Sometimes remains unchanged even if contradictory information is presented
Emphasises negative thoughts
What are the positives of groups?
Source of self identity and self esteem
What are some potential negative of groups?
Focus on negatives in outside groups
Prejudice
What is prejudice?
Prejudgement based on negative stereotypes
What is discrimination?
Behaving differently with people of different groups because of their group membership
When are we more likely to rely on stereotypes?
When under pressure, fatigued or suffering information overload
How can negative stereotypes be challenged?
Reflective practice and getting to know members of other groups
What is the medical model of disability?
People are disabled by their impairments or differences
What is the social model of disability?
Disability is caused by the way society is organised, barriers to those with a disability (trying to remove these)
What are the negative connotations of the medical model of disability?
Looks at what is ‘wrong’ with the person not what they need
Creates low expectation and loss of independence
What barriers are there for disabled people in healthcare?
Physical/environmental (accessibility)
Attitudinal and behavioural (way staff treat the disabled)
Institutional (staff training)
