7. Hebrew Adjectives Flashcards
How do Hebrew adjectives inflect?
Just like nouns
How do Hebrew adjectives agree with the nouns they modify?
They agree in gender and number.
The gender of an adjective does not change the meaning of an adjective.
What happens to the vowels of most adjectives when the inflectional endings are added?
The vowels change (like nouns)
What are the three adjectival usages? (And what do they mean?)
- Attributive use – the good student
- Predicative use – the student is good
- Substantive use – the adjective is used independently as a noun
What is the word order for attributive adjectives?
Attributive adjectives follow the noun they are modifying.
How must an **attributive adjective **agree with its noun?
It must agree in gender, number, and definiteness.
How must a predicative adjective agree with its noun?
It matches the noun in gender and number, but not definiteness.
What is the word order for predicative adjectives?
The adjective may either precede or follow the noun.
How is the substantive adjective used?
When it is used independently from a noun.
Eg the hebrew adjective meaning ‘wise’, by itself, means ‘a wise one’ or ‘a wise man’. With the definite article it means ‘the wise one/man’
