If a parent is uneducated, they won’t take as much interest in their child’s education, and won’t encourage them or help them see the importance of education.

No quiet place to study.
Cold and damp can cause sickness
Crowded means a greater risk of accidents
EXTERNAL FACTORS: 1.) Material Deprivation - Diet and Health What does this mean? What does it cause?
If a child is from a poor household they’re more likely to have behavioural and emotional issues.
They have low vitamin and mineral intake as they survive off frozen food, they don’t achieve as they could be hungry and can’t focus.
EXTERNAL FACTORS: 1.) Material Deprivation - Financial Support Education is NEVER free Why?
Hidden costs like books, trips, laptops, stationary etc.

Teachers judge pupils on how close they come to the ‘ideal pupil’.

2.) Self Fulfilling Prophecy
Conforming to your label.
What did Rosenthal and Jacobson do?
Told the school they had s new test to identify those pupils who would spurt ahead and they found teachers treated these differently.

Separating children into ‘sets’.
How does this exclude the WC and keep them at low ability?
They’re always put in bottom sets due to labelling and they can’t succeed as their ability is then limited.

4.) Pupil Subcultures
A group of pupils who share similar values and behaviour patterns.
Why do the WC class join these?
To rebel and question authority and to ‘get back’ at the school.
