A

EAL is English as a first language.
If English is not spoken at home it can hold children back significantly as obviously the schools language is English and if they aren’t socialised into that it causes educational underachievement.

Why do some black pupils lack motivation and what are they socialised into that cause this?

A

They’re socialised into the fatalistic ‘live for today’ attitude which means they do not prioritise education as they don’t look at the future they live in the present.
The media has also created anti school role models for black pupils. In particular what is described as the ‘Ultra-Tough Ghetto Superstars’ on MTV.
