7. Drugs Flashcards
Drugs
Any substance taken into the body that modifies or affects chemical reactions in the body.
Medecines

Antibiotics
Used to treat bacterial infections e.g pneumonia. They work by disrupting the metabolic processes during bacterial growth, and by stopping growth of spores (reproductive units).
How can development of resistant bacteria be minimised?
By using antibiotics only when essential and ensuring treatment is completed ( so that any remaining bacteria in the body are killed.)
Why do antibiotics not affect viruses?
Because they do no have their own matabolism and instead use the pathways of their host cell (which they enter and hide in) preventing them from being destroyed by antibiotics.
