In 1410 the king Martín “the Humane” died without an heir (descendant). Because of that, the nobility of Aragón, Catalonia and Valencia signed the “Compromise of Caspe” (1492) to choose a new king, Ferdinand of Antequera.

- In the countryside nobles imposed feudal abuses to peasants, who made revolts.
- In cities as Barcelona, the artisans and peasants (Busca) confronted the nobility and rich bourgeoisie (Biga).
How did the conflicts end? Explain what happened
These conflicts ended in a civil war: Busca supported King John II and fought against Biga. The king won and limited the privileges of the nobility.
In the 14th century who governed Castile?
The Trastámara dynasty governed Castile, that was supproted by the nobility, but nobles wanted more power.
Who are the favourites?
The favourites were people that helped the king to govern Castile and León.
Who wanted to limit the power of the nobility?
Peter I wanted to limit the power of the nobility by promoting the wool industry (bourgeoisie).
How did the Civil War of Castile started?
The step brother of Peter I, Henry of Trastámara, promised more power for the nobility if they helped him against the King—> Civil War started
Who won the Civil War of Castile?
Finally, Henry II won and became king. Also, he gave more land and privileges to the nobility.
Explain the 2nd civil war in Castile
In 1474, Henry IV of Castile died. His heir was his daughter Joana “La Beltraneja” but war started with her aunt Isabella
After the war, Isabella was the new queen supported by her husband, Ferdinand of Aragón.
