A

King Sancho VII died without an heir–> His nephew Theobald of Champagne (French) became the new king. The nobility wanted to preserve their privileges, so, they made him sign the Fuero General, a law that contains their rights and duties.

A

Navarre had 150.000 inhabitants. It was divided into 6 districts or Merindades: Pamplona, Estella, Tudela, Olite, Sangüesa and Ultrapuertos (in France).

Livestock farming and vegetable farming were important in the South. Also, the “Camino de Santiago” stimulated trade and artisanship.

A

-1441: Queen Blanche died. According to the fuero, her husband John II of Aragón couldn´t be the king, but he didn´t want to let his son Charles govern.

  • In 1457 John II died and his daughter Eleanor became the queen. But she also died, so the Crown of Navarre was for a French relative: Catherine of Foix.
  • But, in 1512. Ferdinand of Aragón, son of John II occupied Navarre conquered it and united it to Castile.
