What is a gland?
An organ that releases or secretes a substance.
What is an exocrine gland?
They are glands that secrete their products through a tube called a duct.
What is an endocrine gland?
They are glands that don’t have ducts. They secrete their products into blood vessels that pass through the gland.
What is the pituitary gland?
It is a gland found at the base of the brain. It produces a number of hormones (for example ADH).
What is the hypothalamus?
A part of the brain that is responsible for controlling the pituitary gland.
What hormone does the adrenal gland produce?
Adrenaline
What does adrenaline do?
It prepares the body for a flight or fight response by :
- Increasing the breathing rate
- Increasing the heart rate
- Dilating the pupils
- Increasing mental awareness
What does insulin do?
It stimulates the liver cells to take up glucose and convert it to glycogen. (To lower the blood glucose level)
What is diabetes?
It is a disease where the pancreas can’t make enough insulin to keep blood/glucose levels constant.
