(6) Coordination Flashcards
What is a stimulus?
It is a change in an animal’s surroundings.
What is a response?
It is a reaction to the change in the surroundings.
What is a nerve impulse?
It is information transmitted through a nerve cell in the form of an electrical impulse.
What does a receptor do?
They detect stimuli by changing its energy into electrical energy of the nerve impulses.
What is the biological name for a nerve cell?
A neurone
Where do impulses from the receptor pass to?
To the nerves containing sensory neurones until they reach the brain or spinal cord.
What is the CNS?
It consists of the brain and the spinal cord.
What nerve cells transmit impulses to glands and muscles?
Motor neurones
What are dendrons?
They are fine cytoplasmic extensions from the cell body of a neurone.
What are dendrites?
They are finer extensions coming from dendrons.
What are synapses?
They are the junctions/gaps between neurones.
What is an axon?
It is one of the extensions in the motor neurone that is much longer than other dendrons. This is the fiber that carries the impulses to the effector organ.
What is the myelin?
It is a sheath of fatty material that cover the axon. It is there to protect the axon from short circuiting with other axons.
Where do rods work?
They work in dim light, but they can’t differentiate colours well.
Where do cones work?
They work best in bright light, and they can differentiate colours well.
