7: Cellular Respiration Flashcards
1
Q
Oxidation
A
the process of hydrogen atoms leaving a moleculel
2
Q
Glucose breakdown: step 1
A
Glycolysis
- occurs outside mitchondria
- breakdown of glucose into 2 pyruvate
- glucose activated, 2 ATP gained
- results in NADH
3
Q
Glucose breakdown: step 2
A
Prep Reaction
- in matrix of mitchondria
- pyruvate broken dwn into 2-carbon acetyl carried by coenzyme A (CoA)
- Oxidation of pyruvate results in NADH + CO2
4
Q
Glucose breakdown: step 3
A
Citric Acid Cycle
- in matrix of mitochondria
- oxidation occurs
- NADH + FADH2 results
- more CO2 released
- produces 2 ATP
5
Q
Glucose breakdown: step 4
A
Electron Transport Chain
- electron carriers in the cristae of mitochondria
- NADH + FADH2 give up electrons to chain
- electrns move from higher to lower energy
- O2: final electron acceptor
- combines with H+ to produce H2O
6
Q
Alternate metabolic pathways in food
A
- Proteins
- Carbs
- Fats and Oils
7
Q
when does Fermentation occur?
A
when oxygen isn’t available and complete breakdown of glucose isn’t possible
8
Q
What is Fermentation?
A
anaerobic breakdown of glucose
8
Q
How does Fermentation occur?
A
- pyruvate formed by glycolysis accepts 2 H+ atoms
- reduced to lactate
- reaction regenerates NAD+ which picks up more electrons
9
Q
What does Fermentation produce?
A
- 2 ATP per glucose
- rapid burst of energy
10
Q
Microorganisms using fermentation
A
- in order to produce organic acid
- yeasts generate CO2 + ethyl alcohol to make bread rise
