7 - Blood Components and Homeostasis Flashcards
Functions of blood
distribution, regulation, protection
Components of blood
plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets
Haemopoiesis
the production of blood cells and platelets, which occurs in the bone marrow.
Erythropoiesis
formation of red blood cells
erythropoietin
A hormone produced and released by the kidney that stimulates the production of red blood cells by the bone marrow.
2 categories of leukocytes
granulocytes and agranulocytes
function of leukocytes
defence and immunity
3 categories of granulocytes
neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils
Neutrophils
Phagocytes - move to site of infection
eosinophils
Allergic response and parasitic invasion
Basophils
Allergic, inflammatory response and parasitic invasion
Lymphocytes
A type of white blood cell that make antibodies to fight off infections
Monocytes
An agranular leukocyte that is able to migrate into tissues and transform into a macrophage.
Platelets
blood clotting
Haemostasis
vascular spasm, platelet plug formation, coagulation
platelet plug formation
platelets stick together to form a temporary seal to cover the break in the vessel wall
blood clot
The conversion of blood from a liquid form to solid through the process of coagulation
tissue fluid formation
capillary blood pressure filters water and small molecules from the plasma
lymph and blood vessels
lymph is the 3L of fluid not reabsorbed which drains into the circulatory system via lymphatic ducts
