7 Flashcards
Tides
Flood tide and ebb tide occurs twice a day.
Spring tide
Largest tidal range
Neap tide
Lowest tidal range
The intertidal - or the littoral zone
The physical zone covered and uncovered by tide.
Subtidal - or sublittoral zone
Permanently covered.
Splash - or supralittoral zone
Above intertidal zone.
Waves
Waves are the result of energy being transferred between two fluids/media moving at different rates eg air-water.
Reflective beach type
If a beach consists of coarse material, the swash drains into the beach face so that the backswash is minimal. Material will be deposited, resulting in a steep beach face.
Dissipative beach type
Fine sand beaches remain waterlogged. Each swash is followed by a backswash that removes the sand resulting in a flattened beach face.
The most common type along the Swedish west and south coasts.
