2 Flashcards
Catchment
Där vattnet rinner ut till en ”större” del.
Usually increase along a river - chemical constituents.
Conductivity
The ability to conduct electricity.
Usually measured in fresh water instead of salinity.
Expressed in mS/m, mS/cm or qS/cm.
(High conc. Of ions means higher cond.)
O2 saturation
The maximum amount of oxygen that will dissolve in that water body, at the temperature and pressure which constitute stable equilibrium conditions.
Expressed in %.
The CO2 concentration in water
Is determined of pressure, temp and salinity.
CO2 is more soluble in water when it forms bicarbonate and carbonate via carbonic acid.
Means that only little CO2 gas is present in water.
CO2 + H2O = H2CO3 = H + HCO3 = 2H + CO3.
Fresh water organisms occure?
At a pH range of 6,0 - 8,0.
Slow decomposition in northern wetlands can..?
Give pH as low as 4.
Alkalinity
The buffering capacity.
It is a measure of the concentration of bicarbonate and carbonate in solution.
Photosynthesis requires?
Light, CO2 and the nutrients: NO3 and PO4.
Compensation point
The light intensity at which the amount of carbon dioxide released in respiration equals the amount used in photosynthesis:
Production = Respiration
Or the amount of oxygen used in respiration equals the amount released in photosynthesis.
Critical depth
Phytoplankton growth is exactly matched by the losses of phytoplankton biomass within a specific depth interval.
