6A (THE 5 AUSTRALIAN DIETARY GUIDELINES) Flashcards
ADG-1 ‘Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight, be physically active and choose amounts of nutritious food and drinks to meet your energy needs’.
This advises the Australians to consume appropriate amounts of healthy foods and drinks to meet their individual needs, to avoid over-consuming and under-consuming kilojoules.
How would ADG-1 improve health status if people choose to follow it? (‘Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight, be physically active and choose amounts of nutritious food and drinks to meet your energy needs’)
If people choose to follow this guideline, this would reduce the rates of overweight and obesity, which in turn also reduce the morbidity and mortality rates associated with diet-related diseases.
How would ADG-2 improve health status if people choose to follow it? (‘Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods from these five food groups everyday’.)
If people choose to follow the ADG-2, this would mean that they are consuming an adequate nutrient intake, which would also reduce the prevalence associated with diet-related diseases that are caused by the underconsumption of nutrients such as anaemia.
ADG-3 ‘limit intake of foods containing saturated fats, added salt, added sugars and alcohol’.
The foods that Australians are advised to avoid are discretionary foods, as well as alcohol, as they have minimal nutritional value, and are not essential for a healthy and balanced diet.
How would ADG-3 improve health status if people choose to follow it?
ADG-3 would reduce the burden of disease that are attributable to diet-related diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, which can be caused by the high consumption of fats.
ADG-4 ‘encourage, support, and promote breastfeeding’.
Breastfeeding promotes the health of both the mother and the infant. The WHO recommended that the infant should be exclusively breastfeed for the first 6 months within which they are born.
Benefits of breastfeeding for infant:
- Breast milk is easily digested by an infant.
- Breast milk enhances cognitive development.
- Breast milk promotes a healthy infant body weight.
Benefits of breastfeeding for mother:
- Breast milk does not take time to purchase and prepare.
- Breastmilk does not cost anything.
- Breastmilk reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
How would ADG-4 improve health status if people follow it?
If Australians follow ADG-4 this would mean that more mothers are breast-feeding their babies which could improve self-assessed health status, due to low costs associated with breast-milk.
ADG-5 ‘care for your food; prepare and store it safely’
this guideline aims to prevent food from becoming contaminated with infectious pathogens.
Ways to prepare and store food safely:
- Using seperate chopping boards for different meats.
- Maintaining fridge temperature below 5c.
- Washing hands before preparing and cooking meals.
How would ADG-5 improve health status if people choose to follow it?
If people choose to follow the advice of ADG-5, this would reduce the incidence and prevalence of food borne diseases, such as salmonella.
