Q

Define climate change.

A

Climate change refers to the changes in global weather patterns, which may be also be used to refer specifically to the rapid climate change post-1900, which occurred largely due to human activity.

Q

Explain RISING SEA LEVELS as an implication of climate change, and how it can affect HW & health status.

A

The increase in global temperature has caused ice melting at a rapid rate, such as ice caps, because of the rising global temperature.

HW: Rising sea levels, causes land erosion, which is the destruction of homes, particularly those living near coastal areas. Indeed, this causes severe stress and anxiety for people, as it involves having to move away, thus impairing mental health and wellbeing.

HEALTH STATUS: Rising sea levels, can contaminate food and water, due to salt water intrusion, therefore increasing the prevalence of waterborne and food borne diseases such as cholera.

Q

CHANGING WEATHER PATTERNS as an implication of climate change and how it can affect HW and health status.

A

Climate change has resulted in the average surface temperature increasing, causing prolonged periods of heat.

HW: the increasing temperature and the prolonged periods of heat, can increase the risk of heat strokes, which causes the skin becoming itchy and dry, thus impairing an individuals physical health and wellbeing.

HEALTH STATUS: the increase in temperature causes soil to dry out, which therefore affects the growth of crops, and limits the availability of food. If there is a limited amount of food, this can increase the incidence of malnutrition among people.

Q

MORE EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS and how it can affect HW and health status.

A

Climate change can increase the frequency and severity of extreme weather events and natural disasters, such as cyclones, droughts, and bushfires.

HW: Bushfires can affect peoples respiratory system, and therefore their physical HW, because of the strong smoke, that impairs with the breathing of an individual.

HEALTH STATUS: bushfires can increase the morbidity rates associated with mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety, as it causes severe stress from having to move out and seek shelter somewhere else and thus adapt in a different environment.
