Q

Why are stem cells necessary?

A

When stem cells become specialised, they lose the ability to divide. So a constant supply is needed

Multipotent

17
Q

Where are plant stem cells found?

A

In meristematic tissue. Meristem and apical meristem, and vascular cambium

18
Q

What potency are meristem stem cells?

A

Pluripotent.

19
Q

List some uses of stem cells.

A

Treatment of burns, drug trials, developmental biology, treating Parkinson’s Disease.

20
Q

Explain the ethical issues regarding the use of embryonic stem cells.

A

-Removal of stem cells from embryos normally results in the destruction of the embryo.
-There are religious and moral objections to this, as many people believe life begins at conception, and destruction of an embryo is murder.
-Embryos have no rights.
-Embryos cannot give informed consent

21
Q

Explain the ethical issues regarding the use of adult stem cells.

A

-Less contraversial,
-The procedure is painful
-Donor gives informed consen
