6.3.6 extinction Flashcards
what is extinction
when there are no remaining individuals of a species still alive
why do species become extinct
poorly adapted to their environment are less likely to survive and reproduce
why do new diseases cause extinction
some don’t have resistant alleles therefore they die
why do new predators cause extinction
haven’t had to evolve therefore they die cause they don’t have camouflage etc
why do New, better adapted and more successful
competitors cause extinction
new competitors come in and take all the resources leaving none for the originals and they slowly die off
why does changes to the environment over
geological time cause extinction
species may not be able to adapt to these changes and will die off for example global warming
why do single catastrophic
events cause extinction
wipe out entire ecosystems and habits swell as the species for example astroid hitting earth
