5.2.3 control of blood glucose concentration Flashcards
how is blood glucose monitored
controlled by panaceas
what is the pancreas
part of the endocrine gland (puts hormones into blood stream) and also produces enzymes for digestion
what is blood glucose concentration related to
homeostasis as it has to be kept in a narrow range like body temperature
what can raise glucose levels in the blood and how can it be reduced
carbohydrates can increase this and this can be lowered by insulin released by the pancreas
what bad thing happens in glucose levels are to high
lead to cells of the body losing water by osmosis, which can be dangerous
where does excess glucose go and converted into
goes into liver and muscle cells and is converted into glycogen
what is type 1 diabetes and how can it be treated
this is where the the pancreas fails to produce sufficient insulin to control blood glucose levels and can be solved with insulin injections
what is type two diabetes and ow can it be treated
this is where body cells don’t respond to insulin and can by treated by a low carbohydrate diet and regular exercise, this is caused by yourself
what happens in negative feedback of blood glucose control (high + low)
if glucose level is to high insulin is released, if blood level is to low glucagon is released
