5.2.1 homeostasis Flashcards
what is homeostasis
regulation of internal responses of a cell or organism in response to internal or external conditions
what does homeostasis maintain
optimal conditions for enzyme action and all cell functions
what does homeostasis control
Blood glucose concentration
Body temperature
Water levels
what controls homeostasis
the brain stem and the spinal cord are involved in maintaining homeostasis – you don’t consciously maintain your body temperature or blood glucose level
what do the automatic systems involve
nervous responses or chemical responses
what do all controls systems include
receptors, coordinators, effectors
what do receptors do
which detect stimuli (changes in the environment)
what do coordinators do
(such as the brain, spinal cord and pancreas) that receive and process information from receptors
what do effectors do
which bring about responses which restore optimum levels
