6.3.2 (c) preservation and conservation Flashcards
why is conservation and preservation important?
aesthetic reasons
prevent loss of biodiversity
economic reasons
what is conservation?
maintenance of biodiversity through human action and management
what is sustainable development?
management of of ecosystems so that natural resources can be used without running out
what is reclamation?
process of restoring ecosystems which have been damaged or destroyed
done through techniques such as controlled burning which can halt succession and increase biodiversity
what is preservation?
protection of an area by restricting or banning human interference so that the ecosystem is kept in its orginal state
LEAVING THE ECOSYSTEM ALONE
NO HUMAN INTERFERENCE
what are the 3 reasons for conservation?
economic
social
ethical
ecological
economic reason
ecosystems provides human resources which are lost if conservation of ecosystems does not occur
examples of ways conservation helps the economy?
many species are used for medicinal drugs, clothes and food
trees are used to produce timber and paper
GLOBAL TRADE
social reason
many people enjoy what nature has to offer aesthetically as well as doing activities in and around nature
examples of ways conservation helps social life?
walking
bird watching
cycling
climbing
what is the ethical reason for conservation?
all organisms have a right to exist and they play an important role in their ecosystem which we have no right to disrupt
protect ecosystems for future generations to enjoy
ecological reason
to help prevent climate change
to help prevent disruption of food change
preventing climate change
by not deforesting entire ecosystems, you prevent the release of CO2 when trees are burnt (forest fires)
CO2 traps heat and causes the atmosphere to heat up
preventing disruption of food chain
removing an ecosystem may cause one species to become extinct
causes a knock on effect with the rest of the food chain
