20.1 Variation and inheritance Flashcards
what is a phenotype?
the characteristics an organism displays
what is an allele?
type of gene
alleles on a pair of chromosomes
what is the genotype?
the genetic makeup of an organism
OR
combination of alleles an organism inherits
what is polygenic?
when a characteristic is determined by many genes
what is monogenic?
when a characteristic is determined by a single gene
what variation is polygenic?
continuous
what variation is monogenic?
discontinuous
what is continuous variation?
quantitative data which is measured
controlled by BOTH genes and the environment
has no distinct groups
what is discontinuous variation?
qualitative data which is grouped
controlled ONLY by genes
has two or more distinct categories
what are 2 examples of environmental factors causing variation?
etiolation
chlorosis
what is etiolation?
when a plant grows abnormally due to not enough light
what is chlorosis?
when plants dont produce enough chlorophyll due to a lack of magnesium
what is the dominant allele?
version of a gene which will always be expressed if present
what is the recessive allele?
version of a gene which can only be expressed if 2 copies are present
