6.3 - Social Facilitation Flashcards
Social facilitation
What is social facilitation?
The positive effect of the presence of others on performance.
What is social inhibition?
The negative effect of the presence of others on performance.
Zajonc’s drive theory talks about types of others in performance. State the 4 others that can be split into 2 groups?
Passive others - audience & co-actors / people who watch or do the same thing but are not interactive.
Interactive others - Competitive co-actors & emotive supporters. These are the interactive people who influence performance.
What does Zajonc’s drive theory state?
While others are present during performance, arousal increases.
An increase in arousal causes an increase in the likelihood of a dominant response.
How can Zajonc’s drive theory affect certain performers differently?
- Can positively affect performers by increasing the likelihood of the dominant response –> social facilitation .
- Can negatively affect the performers by causing social inhibition.
Social facilitation causes………… (3 things)
- Skills are well-learnt
- Autonomous learners
- Used for extrovert’s
- Familiar environment
- High TAS
- Gross/simple skills
Social inhibition causes…………. (3 things)
- Skills not well learnt
- Cognitive learners
- Introverts
- Unfamiliar setting
- High TAF
- Fine, Complex skills
What is evaluation apprehension?
When the performer worries about being judged.
When does facilitation occur in evaluation apprehension?
When there is a high tendancy to achieve success (TAS) and a high need to achieve (NAch) for extrovert’s.
When does inhibition occur for evaluation apprehension?
When there is a high tendancy to avoid failure (TAF) used by introverts and want to avoid failure.
What is the proximity effect?
When the effects of an audience are greater, when the audience are closer to the performance
What is homefield advantage?
When the performer performs to a higher quality as they are suing under recognised conditions.
How does homefield advantage effect performance?
3 things
- Gives the performer a feel of familiarity.
- Playing with a supportive crowd that increases the chance of facilitation.
- Expect a change when in team sports.
State what Zajonc’s Drive theory causes.
Audience causes an increase in arousal leading to an increase in the likelihood of a dominant response.
How does cue utilisation improve performance?
- The use of selective attention to detect relevant cues and eliminate distractions.
