When does labelling happen?
A majority group sees minority group as inferior, they may label them due to what they’ve heard or stereotypes.
People react to the same act differently
Killing someone at war is heroic, killing someone on the street is murder.
Self concept
How we see ourselves, created by recognising how others see us and label us.
Master Status
When a label leads to how we think of ourselves, can lead to career criminals.
Primary Deviance
Crime is committed FIRST, label given SECOND.
Secondary Deviance
Label is given FIRST, crime is committed SECOND.
Prospective Label
Saying that due to a label someone will do something.
Retrospective Label
Going back and labelling after someone has done something.
Bull and Green
Supporting.
58 participants (10 policemen) asked to evaluate 10 male faces as likely criminals. People picked one for drugs possession 38 times. Police had similar views to public.
Cambliss
Supporting.
Divided delinquents into ‘Saints’ or ‘Roughnecks’ based on class, grades. Police consistently took legal action with roughnecks.
Deterministic
Ignores free will and says that because someone’s been called a criminal that they will become one.
