6.10 Piping Flashcards
What is piping?
An acoustical/mechanical signal that consits of a pulse of high-pitched sound
How does piping work?
They uncouple their wings and flex their wing muscles when pressing their thorax agaisnt naother bee or comb. Worker piping pulses last around 1 second and sweep up in ptich
What are the 3 types of worker piping?
Wings-apart piping, Wings-together piping, Beeps/Squeaks
What is wings-aprt piping?
This takes place within the hive, thought to be carried out by workers in queenright coonies that encourage workers to come out and foeage. It is an excitation of resting bees. In queenlees colonies, this type of piping is carried out by those who are laying workers
What is wings-together piping
This takes palce on a swarm surface and perfomed by nest site scouts. It helps to stimulate workers in the swarm to heat themeselves up in prepeation for take off
What is beep/squak piping?
Performed during waggle dances
What are the two types of queen piping?
Quacking and Tooting
What is Quacking (piping)
Perfomed by virgin queens still in ther cells. It lasts 200 milliseconds. When emerged queens hear this they stop their movement and start tooting. Workers will also freeze upon hearing this.
What is tooting (piping)?
This is performed by virgin queens once they have emerged. The tone is higher than quacking. Tooting causses workers to freeze. Tooting starts with a single toot that lasts for more than 1 second then several shorter toots. David Tarpy suggests gynes toot to stop other gynes from emerging
How do workers respond to quacking queens?
Workers will cluster around the cell and protect it.
