6. Thyroid gland Flashcards
thyroid hormone deficiency resulting in decreased metabolic rate
Clinical signs:
- lethargy
- weight gain
- obesity
- haircoat changes
- low serum thyroid hormone concentrations
HYPOthyroidism
most common causes:
1. lymphocytic thyroiditis
2. idiopathic atrophy of thyroid gland
HYPOthyroidism
diagnosis of HYPOthyroidism
serum thyroid hormone testing
non-neoplastic enlargement of the thyroid gland
goiter
much more common in neonates and growing animals
goiter
caused by iodine deficiency
most common in:
1. newborn pigs
2. lambs
3. calves
goiter
susceptible to iodine toxicity due to dams fed excess iodine during gestation
foals
in plants; produce goiter when ingesteede in sufficient amounts (esp. in absence of adequate iodine intake)
goitrogenic substancecs
hyperplasia of the thyroid gland, goiter & multple congenital musculoskeletal anomalies
congenital hypothyroidism / dysmaturity syndrome (foals)
genetic enzyme defect in the biosynthesis of thyroid hormones
familial dyshormonogenetic goiter
an overactive thyroid condition
hypermetabolism and high circulating thyroid hormone concentrations
HYPERthyroidism
Blood tests to measure hyperthyroidism
- total T4
- free T4
