6. The Cell Cycle and Mitosis Flashcards
What are the four phases of the cell cycle?
S phase
M phase
G1 phase
G2 Phase
What is the S phase of the cell cycle?
synthesis phase; cell is actively replicating its genome
What is the M phase of the cell cycle?
mitosis and cytokinesis occur
What is mitosis?
partitioning of cellular components into two halves
What is cytokinesis?
physical process of cell divsion
What is interphase?
gap phases plus the S phase (G0)
What are the four phases of mitosis?
prophase
metaphase
anaphase
telophase
What occurs during prophase?
genome becomes visible once it condenses into densely packed chromosomes
What occurs during metaphase?
chromosomes line up at the center of the cell forming the metaphase plate
What occurs during anaphase?
spindle fibers short and the centromeres of each sister chromatid pair are pulled apart
What occurs during telephase?
nuclear membrane forms around the bunch of chromosomes at each end of the cell
What is a karyotype?
display of an organism’s genome
