5. Other Structural Elements of the Cell Part 2 Flashcards
What is amoeboid movement?
changes in cytoplasmic structure which cause the cytoplasm and the rest of the cell to flow in one direction
What are intermediate filaments?
heterogenous, composed of a wide range of polypeptides
What is the purpose of intermediate filaments?
provide strong cell structure and resist mechanical stress
What are the three cell junctions?
tight junctions
desmosomes
gap junctions
What are tight junctions also known as?
occluding junctions
What are tight junctions?
seal between the membranes of adjacent cells that blocks the flow of molecules across the entire cell layer
What are desmosomes?
spots along the cell that hold the cells together
What are desmosomes composed of?
fibers that span the plasma membrane of two cells
What is keratin?
protein that will form a plaque that anchors desmosomes to the plasma membranes
What are gap junctions?
pore-like connections between adjacent cells that allow cytoplasms to mix
What can fit through gap junctions?
ions, amino acids, and carbohydrates
What cannot fit through gap junctions?
polypeptides and organelles
