Imprisonment:
Is the removal of an offender from society and their detainment in a prison.
Imprisonment Punishment:
Punishes offenders in a just manner.
Imprisonment Protection:
Protects society from offenders who could be at a risk of reoffending.
Imprisonment Rehabilitation:
Imprisonment allows prisoners access to treatment and training programs to turn them into productive citizens. However, it is likely to lead to further crimes because of the influence of other criminals and the difficulty of returning to normal life after having spent time in prison.
Imprisonment Denunciation:
Courts can impose long sentences to show their disapproval.
Imprisonment Deterrence:
May not be an adequate specific deterrence as individuals mix with serious criminals.
Fines:
Are a form of penalty in the form of monetary punishment. The most common fines are traffic infringements and indictable offences such as fraud.
Fines purpose:
The main purpose of fines is to deter individuals and society from committing the offence.

Denunciation (Court give a high fine)
Fines do not uphold:
Rehabilitation
Protection
Community Corrections Order:
A Community Corrections Order is a flexible order that can have different conditions applied based on: the circumstances of the offence, the offenders’ needs and the severity of the offence.
Example of a CCO condition:
Unpaid community work (maximum of 600 hours)
Treatment and rehabilitation
Purpose of CCO:
Deter
Punish
Rehabilitate
CCO Deterrence:
Achieves this by restricting the offenders’ freedom
CCO Protection Positive:
The offender is prevented from reoffending as there are a number of restrictions on their freedom.
