Punishment:
A
The offender should be punished to such an extent and in such a manner that it is just in all circumstances and so that society can feel there has been retribution.

Deterrence:
A
To discourage the offender from re-offending (specific deterrence) and to discourage others from committing the same offence (general deterrence)

Denunciation:
A
To show the courts disapproval of the conduct the offender engaged in.

Protection:
A
To protect the community from the offender by removing the offender from society (i.e. put in prison)

Rehabilitation:
A
To improve the offender’s character so that they will become a productive member of society. This includes training and treatment programs.
