-1871 Rhodes has moved to Kimberly and by 1890 he had purchased every diamond mining company in Kimberly

Benefits and drawbacks of the British Raj

A

-the British provided schools and unis but only the privileged few could benefit
-british provided jobs for indians, on railways, in the army, police ect
Built railways but these were geared to needs of control and trade; most villages lacked even mud roads
Poverty continued: death rates from faime were high

-in the 30 years following the rebellion, 60,000 indians entered the universitys
-universities were established in Bombay and Calcutta in 1857

A

-relationships between ruler and ruled had grown further aggravated
-the British imposed legal systems that favoured themselves still
-even thoes with education found it hard to obtain promotions beyond the lower ranks of the colonial bureaucracy

How did the economy change in India after the rebellion?

A

-growth investment rapidly changed after the rebellion- especially railways, they helped stimulate trade and the development of previously inaccessible areas
-some European style factories where built although since the bulk of manufactured goods came from britan there was virtually no heavy industry

A

-the lands of the bantu had been subjected to colonisation by Europeans for centuries
-the British had taken possession of Cape colony at the tip of the continent during the Napoleonic wars
-relations between the British and boers had been reasonably peaceful until the middle of the 19th century

A

-it was the discovery of diamonds near Kimberly that opened a path of greater friction
-this attracted both white settlers and indigenous bantu speaking people to the area
-1868 the British annexed Basutoland claiming that the indigenous Africans there where seeking British protection
-1871 British took west Griqualand- caused racial prejudice upon the Boers living there

A

-from 1880 Boers rejected British control, attaching the British army
-after a humiliating British faliure at Majuba Hill, the Brits were forced to sign the convention of Pretoria which recognized boer self government in the Transvaal
-1886 new gold discoverys near the Transvaal produced further instability and brought a mass of Europeans

Treatment of Bantu

A

-in all this expansion and empire building, little thought was given to the local Bantu people
-land was increasingly eroded by the settlers
-laws were passed that limited the right of black Africans to have any claims over the mines or to trade in their products
-black Africans relegated to preforming manual labour while whites got skilled jobs
-black workers forbidden by law from living where they wanted, forced to stay in segregated neighborhoods or mining compounds
