Military embarrassment of the boer war

-1902 education act aimed to improve schools and open more secdonary schools
-these polices seemed quite basic- suprising they weren’t already in place
-shows that britan wasn’t focusing on its own country
National efficiency movement
-concern that nation needed to be healthier and better educated
-1902 journalists and political commentators refferd to britan as a nation of amateurs and that leadership needed to be stronger
-without national efficiency, the country would be eclipsed by growing powers. Eg Germany
Measures taken to improve national efficiency
-1902 education act- led to opening of 1000 secondary schools over following decade
-a new centre of technological, medical and scientific excellence was established in London 1906- ‘imperial college’
Popular culture
-the spread of education, literacy and political involvement created an audience for the imperial message
Popular press
-bewteeen 1890-1914 it was something of a golden age for newspaper publications advances in printing and the emergence of the professional journalist
-daily mail set up in 1896
-it was targeted to the lower middle class at an affordable price- it was pro imperialism
Empire in schools
-history and geography glorified British activity in the empire
-empire day saw children salute to the British flag and hear of the greats of the British empire like Cecil Rhodes
-culterally, the British empire was viewed as generally positive

-showed how imperialism filtered in the British psyche at the time
King George V’s coronation
-his coronation in 1921 was accompanied by a festival of the empire
-was an exhibition of the empires culture and trade
