6. Plant Structures: Transport in Plants Flashcards
What are the 2 types of Transport vessels in Flowering Plants?
Xylem and phloem
What are Phloem Tubes?
Coloums of elongated cells with small pores in end walls - allow stuff to flow through
Transports food substances made in leaves to rest of plant for immediate use or for storage
Translocation - energy via respiration - goes both directions
What are Xylem Tubes?
Made of dead cells - no end walls - hole down middle - strengthened with material called lignin
Carry water and mineral ions from roots to stem and leaves
Movement of water and mineral ions for the roots, through the xylem, out if the leaves is called transpiration
What are Root Hairs used for?
Take in minerals and water
Give plant a larger surface area to absorb water and mineral ions from the soil
Mineral ions are absorbed by active transpiration and water is absorbed through osmosis
