1. Key Concepts: Microscopy Flashcards
Study cells using Microscopes - what are they?
Lenses magnify image - increase resolution - higher the resolution means clearer the image and in more detail
What are Light Microscopes? How do you use to view a specimen?
Light microscopes - invented in 1590s - light through specimen - see nuclei and chloroplasts - study living cells
What are Electron Microscopes?
Electron microscopes - invented in 1930s - use electrons rather than light - higher magnification and resolution
How do you create a Scientific Drawing of a Specimen?
Sharp pencil - outline main features using clear lines - drawing take up half space available - keep parts in proportion
Label important features - straight lines - include magnification used and a scale
What is Magnification?
How many times the image is
If you don’t know which lens was used - workout magnification by measuring the image and know the real size of the specimen
What is the Magnification equation?
Total magnification = eyepiece lens magnification x objective lens magnification
Magnification = image size / real size
How do you work with numbers in Standard Form?
Move decimal point left or right
Number of places decimal point moves - represented by a power of 10
