2. Cells and Control: Nervous System Flashcards
What does the Central Nervous System do?
Coordinates a response
Made up of neurons
Body has lots of sensory receptors - detect a change in environment (stimulus)
When a stimulus is detected by a receptor - info is coverted to an electrical impulse and is sent along sensory neurons to the CNS then decides what to do - impulses travel across relay neurone
CNS sends info to an effector along a motor neurone - effector then responds accordingly (muscle may contract)
How is the Nervous System made up?
Stimulus - Receptor - Sensory neurone - Synapse - Relay neurone - Synapse - Motor neurone - Effector - Response
What are Sensory Receptors?
Group of cells that detect a stimulus
How do impulses travel through the Nervous System?
Information is converted into electrical impulses and sent along sensory neurones
How does CNS co-ordinate a response?
It decides what to do by sending the electrical impulses through the relay neurone
What are Effectors?
A muscle or gland
What is Reaction Time?
The time it takes for you to respond to a stimulus
What are Neurones? What are the 3 types?
Sensory
Relay
Motor
What is a Sensory Neurone?
What is a Motor Neurone?
What is a Relay Neurone?
