6-Performance Characteristics of Woods Flashcards
1
Q
6 different stock forms of timber
A
- Rough sawn
- Planed square edge
- Planed all round
- Natural wood
- Manufactured boards
- Mouldings
2
Q
Rough sawn
A
- Cheapest stock form to buy
- Wont be in specific sizes
- comes direct from seasoning and will have rough surfaces
3
Q
Planed square edge (PSE)
A
- One flat surface (planed)
- Planing will remove about 3mm of the original material
4
Q
Natural wood
A
- comes from trees and is available only at the maximum width of the tree
- Larger pieces can be created by joining pieces together, however when joined perpendicular grain is ensured to minimise distortion
4
Q
Planed all round (PAR)
A
- each surface is planed to create a straight and level finish
- 3mm planed
- Most expensive stock form
5
Q
Manufactured boards
A
- Man made large sheets
- 1220mm x 2440mm
6
Q
Mouldings
A
Pre made mouldings such as skirting boards
- Typically available in stock forms up to 4 metres
7
Q
What is the influence of wood grain
A
the wood will be strong in the direction of the grain, and weaker across the grain
8
Q
Why is wood seasoned?
A
To remove moisture that will distort the wood
9
Q
What are the two types of seasoning?
A
- Kiln Seasoning
- Air Seasoning
10
Q
Air seasoning
A
- Traditional and cheap
- Wood is stacked in a shelter
- Air circulates between the planks to remove excess moisture
- Can take up to a year and is used for outdoor products
11
Q
Kiln seasoning
A
- Expensive and used controlled temperature and humidity conditions
- Wood is stacked on trolleys in a kiln
- It is initially steamy in the kiln, then it becomes much hotter and drier
- Only takes a few weeks and is used for indoor products
