18-Adhesives and Fixings Flashcards
1
Q
Name 5 Adhesives
A
- Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA)
- Contact Adhesive
- UV hardening Adhesive
- Solvent Cement
- Epoxy Resin
2
Q
Adhesives - Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA)
A
- Water based adhesive used to bind wood based materials
- Often used to provide extra stability to a wood joint
- Dries Transparent
- Not usually waterproof
3
Q
Adhesives - Contact Adhesive
A
- Used to bond large areas like sheet material
- Is often used to bond different materials together
- Both pieces are initially coated in the contact adhesive and left for 10 mins until it is ‘Tacky’
- They well then be bonded, adhesion is instant upon contact
4
Q
Adhesives - UV Hardening Adhesive
A
- Clear liquid that quickly cures when exposed to UV light
- Used on metal, glass , and polymers
- Excess adhesive can be wiped away before curing process is initiated so a clean joint is produced
5
Q
Adhesives - Solvent Cement
A
- Clear liquid used to join polymers
- Softens the surfaces of the polymers which allows them to fuse together
- Often used by plumbers to bond non-pressure pipes
6
Q
Adhesives - Epoxy Resin
A
- Used to adhere two different materials
- Comes in two parts, resin and hardener
- They will need to be mixed and applied to joining area
- Can take up to 24 hours to dry fully
7
Q
What is a Jig?
A
- A device that can control the motion of a tool relative to a particular workpiece
- It will hold the work and guide the tool removing the need to repeatedly mark out
8
Q
What is a Fixture?
A
- Something that holds work in a given position while a manufacturing process takes place
- For example a clamping frame used during welding
9
Q
What is the general role of Jigs and Fixtures
A
- Ensure that parts or components can be made repeatedly, efficiently, and accurately
- Used mainly in larger production scales
