1-Properties of materials Flashcards
definition of a mechanical property
How a material reacts to an external force
Compressive strength
The ability to withstand being crushed or shortened by pushing forces
Tensile strength
The ability to resist stretching or pulling forces (tension)
Bending Strength
The ability to resist forces that may bend the material
Shear strength
The ability to resist sliding forces on a parallel plane
Torsional Strength
The ability to resist twisting forces
Hardness
The ability to resist scratching and indentation
Plasticity
The ability to be permanently deformed and maintain in that new shape
Toughness
The ability to absorb impact force without breaking
Ductility
The ability to draw out a material using tension, for example stretching material into wire
Malleability
The ability to withstand deformation via compression without any breaking.
What does malleability increase with?
a rise in temperature
Definition of a physical property
Properties that associate with the actual make up/ structure of a material
Density
The mass of the material relative to its volume
Fusibility
The ability of the material to be converted from a solid to a liquid or molten state, usually occurs by heat
