6. Inheritance Patterns Flashcards
What are the six inheritance patterns?
- autosomal recessive
- autosomal dominant
- mitochondrial
- Y-linked
- X-linked recessive
- X-linked dominant
What is autosomal dominant?
single copy of the allele will confer that trait or disease phenotype
What is autosomal recessive?
two copies of the allele are required for the affected phenotype
What is mitochondrial pattern of inheritance?
traits that are inherited via the mitochondrial genome
What is hemizygosity?
individual only has one copy of the chromosome in a diploid organism
What are sex-linked traits?
traits that are determined by genes located on the X or Y chromosome
How are Y-linked traits passed to offspring?
male parent to male offspring
What are characteristics of X-linked dominant traits?
hardest to identify, will normally affect males more than females
What are characteristics of X-linked recessive traits?
tend to affect males more than females and can skip generations
