3. Mendelian Genetics Flashcards
What is the law of independent assortment?
alleles of one gene will separate into gametes independently of alleles of another gene
What is the law of segregation?
two alleles of an individual are separated and passed on to the next generation single
What is a cross?
mating between what is being studied in mendelian genetics
What is a pure-breeding strain?
strain that consistently yields progeny with the same phenotype
What is a testcross?
when one individual is cross to another individual that has a homozygous recessive genotype
What is a Punnett Square?
visual tool used to predict the results of a cross between two individuals using the laws of segregation and independent assortment
What is purpose of the rule of multiplication?
probability of both of two independent events happening can be found by multiplying the odds of either events alone
What is the purpose of the rule of addition?
can be used to calculate the chances of either of two events happening
What is the purpose of the chi-squared test?
used to compare observed and expected data
What is the purpose of the t-test?
used to compare two data sets
