2. Meiosis Flashcards
What is meiosis?
production of haploid cells from a diploid cell that reduces the number of copies of each chromosome from two to one
What are the two main similiarities between meiosis and mitosis?
- both are preceded by one round of genome replication
- different phases are referred to by the same names
What are the two main differences between meiosis and mitosis?
- mitosis is replication of genome followed by one round of division while meiosis is two rounds of division
- in meiosis, recombination occurs between homologous chromosomes
What occurs during prophase I?
synapsis
What is synapsis?
homologous chromosomes pair together
What regulates synapsis?
synaptonemal complex (SC)
What occurs during metaphase I?
tetrads align along the metaphase plate occurs
What occurs during anaphase I?
homologous chromosomes separate
What occurs during telophase I?
cell divides into two
What is nondisjunction?
failure of homologous chromosomes or sister chromatids to separate correctly during meiosis
