6. Female Reproduction/7. Male Reproduction Flashcards
Reproduction
Process whereby individual organisms produce offspring to continue their genetic lineage
Gonads
Primary sex organs (testes and ovaries)
Gametes
Sex cell produced in gonads (Spermatozoa and oocyte)
Hypothalamus
Area of the brain responsible for homeostatic function
Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH)
Hormone released from hypothalamus, acts on pituitary gland to secrete key regulatory hormones
Pituitary gland
“Master” gland sitting below hypothalamus which secretes key regulatory hormones
Endocrinology
Study of hormone production
H-P-G axis
Hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis; whole cascade of events that must happen for a certain hormone to be secreted or sperm to be released
Gonadotropic hormones
Tells ovaries/testes to secrete
Puberty
Process of maturing from nonfunctional H-P-G into a state of gamete and hormone production
Lutenizing Hormone (LH), Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Stimulate the testes/ovaries
Testes
Produce sperm and testosterone
Scrotum
Support and protect the testes
Spermatic cord
Support and control the temperature of the testes
Epididymis
Maturation and storage of sperm
