What is the Paschal candle?
1 of the most meaningful + noticeable symbols used in Catholic churches.
1 of the 1st + most important features of Easter Vigil ceremony.
When does the Easter Vigil ceremony ideally take place?
During hours of darkness.
What happens during the Easter Vigil ceremony?
When congregation assembled, preferably outside the church, priest lights a fire, light of which breaks darkness.
What does the Easter Vigil ceremony reflect?
Light of Christ rising from grave, destroying power of sin + death. Priest then blesses + lights the Paschal candle(large beeswax candle representing the Risen Christ).
What does Paschal mean?
Relating to Easter, so the Paschal candle is the Easter candle.
What is Eastertide?
50-day period between Easter Sunday + Pentecost.
What is the Last Judgement?
Time when all people have to account for actions + will be rewarded or condemned by God.
What is the last day?
End of time, when Earth will be destroyed + all people will face judgement.
What is an archangel?
Powerful spiritual being who carries out will of God.

State of total separation from God.

Large carved stone placed(either lying or standing) over a burial site.

Something built to remember an important person or event.

Burning of bodily remains of a person.

Area designed for remains of deceased, where mourners can come + reflect in quiet.

Study of what will take place at end of time.
What are cosmic disasters?
Frightening events in universe that will indicate end of time.
What is judgement?
Belief that God judges person based on their actions + either rewards the or punishes them as a result.
What is heaven?
State of eternal happiness in presence of God.
What is purgatory?
State of cleansing to remove effects of sin, help person accept full presence of God.
What is particular judgement?
Time when person judged by God after they die, + has responsibility for actions when alive.
What is final judgement?
Another way of saying Last Judgement.
What is a parable?
Story with religious message; particularly used for stories told by Jesus.
What is Hades?
Word used for ‘hell’ in Greek mythology; place of torment.
What are mortal sins?
Offences against God, yourself or other people that totally destroy relationship with God.

1 of 7 sacraments that gives healing, strength + forgiveness.
What is the commendation of the dying?
Prayers said when person at point of death.
What does Viaticum mean?
Means: ‘with you on the way’; last Communion before death to show Christ is with the person in death.
What is a funeral?
Ceremony to mourn dead person.
What is holy water?
Blessed water used in Baptism.
What is requiem?
Mass for the dead.
What is a crematorium?
Building where dead are cremated.
What is the sanctity of life?
All life is holy as created + loved by God; human life should not be misused or abused.
What is euthanasia?
Killing someone painlessly + with compassion, to end their suffering.
What does euthanasia mean?
‘Good death’.
