What is ‘Genesis’?
First books of the Bible, stories of creation are in it.
What is the ‘Creation of Adam’?
Part of painting on ceiling of Sistine Chapel in Vatican in Rome.
What does the ‘Creation of Adam’ painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican in Rome show?
God giving life to Adam.
How does ‘Creation of Adam’ reflect Catholic beliefs and teachings?
Adam shown as perfect man, full of strength + potential. Reflects what is taught in Genesis: that God made everything ‘very good’ (Genesis 1:31). Adam’s outstretched arm almost touching finger of God, but fingers still bent waiting for God’s life force to straighten them.
Painting represents moment when God makes Adam come to life. Shows that Adam depends on God for life.
God powerful yet ancient. White hair + beard reflect age but body of God still muscular. God looks much older than Adam. Evokes idea that though God is ancient while humanity new. Adam + God lying in similar positions reinforces idea that humanity is made in image of God.
Hands of Adam + God reaching out to each other reflect longing for close relationship between God + man. Not just simply passing of life; building up of harmonious love, knowledge + appreciation of each other.
God shown being carried through air by a group of angels. Reflects his transcendences, Adam shown firmly on ground. Attempt to convey the greatness + majesty of God.
Humans have unique place in God’s creation, as created specially by God and are in close contact with him.
One of the main messages of Michelangelo’s paintings in the Sistine Chapel is that God is the creator of everything. Nothing comes into being without God.
What are some controversial aspects of Michelangelo’s painting ‘Creation of Adam’?
Genesis 2 states that God made Adam out of dust and brought him to life by breathing into his nostrils (Genesis 2:7). Nowhere in the Bible does it say that God touched Adam to give him life.
God + Adam depicted nearly the same size suggesting man equal with God, doesn’t reflect Catholic beliefs.
Some people do not like idea of eternal God being shown as an old man.
What is ‘Genesis 1’?
Poem that describes creation of the universe + shows greatness of God as creator. God’s power shown in effectiveness of his word. When God says, ‘Let there be…’, that thing immediately comes into being. Doesn’t require anything beyond his word to create. God completely beyond created world- transcendent.
God also omnipotent or all-powerful. Has power to do whatever he wants; as seen in Genesis, can even create things from nothing. (ex nihilo). Everything that God made is ‘good’. Reinforces idea God is omnipotent as power allows him to make everything exactly the way he wants it; nothing God makes has any imperfection in it. Poem does show God creates in an orderly way. Also symbolic logic in order. Sun, moon + stars which many people worshipped as gods said to have been created on fourth day. Minor position in sequence + shows not gods.
In this version of creation story, humans last things created, as end point of God’s work. Importance of humanity shown in phrase: ‘God created humankind in his image’ (Genesis 1:27). Means that humans share qualities with GOd like love, knowledge + so on.
What is the definition of ‘transcendent’?
Idea that God is beyond + outside life on earth + universe; quality of God.
What is the definition of ‘omnipotent’?
Almighty, unlimited power; quality of God.

Hebrew word for humanity, people see as name of the first man.
What is the definition of ‘free will’?
