(6) Ed Psych Flashcards
Realist position
Reality exists that can be understood via scientific inquiry
Relativist position
People construct their own reality so there’s never a single “real” thing (shift in attention/expectation)
When teaching children, is it more important to focus on empirical evidence or qualitative data/practice-based evidence?
Qualitative data & practice based evidence (if a kid can’t figure out 1 + 1 = 2, no point in continuing to teach them that way, even if it’s empirically based)
What does a school psychologist do?
Consults with students/teachers/parents, develop/implement screening tools, advise & direct intervention programs, data collection and analysis
Purpose of assessments from realist standpoint
Objectively determine who is good at a specific thing
Purpose of assessments from relativist standpoint
Understand each individual’s strengths/weaknesses
Are learning styles real?
Nope, neuromyth that 90% of teachers believe
“Yfanti & Dukakis (2021) debunking neuromyth of learning styles” findings
Most students preferred the visual or kinaesthetic method. These choices didn’t match the learning style identified by the index
What is the takeaway from learning styles
Presenting in multiple modalities results in better learning
What “learning style” is most common in daily life
80% of learning happens visually
Is LEARNING visual?
No, we use all sensory modalities all the time
Can people have preferences to certain learning styles?
Yes but no evidence to prove matching an individual to one learning style enhances learning
What is un-grading?
Feedback that emphasizes areas of improvement instead of number/letter grades
Benefits to un-grading
Encourages reflection on meaning of feedback and can reduce stress/foster joy of learning
Negatives to un-grading
Creates false positives and misses, only works as well as a student’s ability to self-reflect.
